Aron Ralston: The Man Who Cut Off His Own Arm

A gripping tale of survival against all odds

5-day ordeal in Utah canyon

In April 2003, Aron Ralston, an experienced mountaineer, embarked on a solo descent of Bluejohn Canyon in southeastern Utah. But disaster struck when a boulder dislodged, pinning his right wrist to the side of the canyon wall.

Trapped for 127 agonizing hours, Ralston faced a grim reality: he would either die of thirst or infection, or he would have to take drastic action to free himself. With no hope of rescue, he made the unimaginable decision to amputate his own arm.

Using a dull pocket knife, Ralston spent hours sawing through bone and muscle. The pain was excruciating, but he persevered, driven by an unyielding will to survive.

After finally freeing himself, Ralston faced a perilous 6-hour hike out of the canyon. Weakened and injured, he stumbled through rugged terrain, using sheer determination to reach safety.
