The Korean War: Invasion and Counterinvasion

June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953

Invasion

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when approximately 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army (KPA) crossed the 38th parallel, the boundary between North and South Korea.

The invasion was approved by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and led by North Korean leader Kim Il-sung.

The KPA quickly drove South Korean forces southward and captured the capital, Seoul.

Counterinvasion

However, the KPA's rapid advance came at a heavy cost. They lost approximately 70,000 of their 100,000 troops in the opening phases of the war.

United Nations forces, including troops from the United States, intervened to support South Korea.

The war became a protracted conflict that lasted until July 27, 1953, when an armistice was signed. The Korean War ended in a stalemate, with the border between North and South Korea remaining largely the same as it was before the invasion.
